Talking is the expression of thought. It magnifies the energy of thought thousands of times, creating a reality for the speaker. In the past/future orientation of ordinary consciousness, talking is one of the most dangerous activities you can perform. If you discuss the past, you relive it. You relive it emotionally, which is to say you relive it physically. Emotion is the body’s physical reaction to thought.

Since the mind, on its own, tends to be negatively focused, the past it discusses is the regurgitation of negative memories. Shakespeare said it in a sonnet with these words:

When to the sessions of sweet silent thought,
I summon up remembrance of things past,
I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,
And with old woes new wail my dear time’s waste.

When the mind looks into the future, it frequently is with dread, using speech to express its worst fears. Worry, anxiety, panic, guilt are all the emotional manifestations of thought directed outside the moment. We are addicted to what we call “thinking” but which is actually the replay of negative memories or fearful predictions of the future.

The good news is that the past and the future exist only in our minds. They have no physical expression. There is really no such thing as the future. When tomorrow arrives, it’s today, and yesterday is forever gone. All we ever have to deal with is Now.

In my study of The Fourth Way, unnecessary talking was considered a major obstacle to  present-moment awareness. In the context of The Law of Attraction, talking is seen as an aspect of the reality creation process. We create our lives through directed attention, focused thought. What we talk about becomes our personal reality, not just emotionally, but also materially.
