A common message in the consciousness development arena is to pay more attention to your inner world. “The kingdom of heaven is within” said Jesus, “If you don’t go within, you go without” Neale Donald Walsch (Conversation With God series). I coach inner listening, following your intuition or gut instinct, your inner guidance. These are all pointers toward your deepest inner Self and away from the advice of others.

We all, or most of us, have people in our lives who ardently believe they have our best interests at heart, and no doubt they do. However, despite their good intentions, they do not know what is best for us, only we do, and only then, at levels deeper than surface thought. Presence practice is all about quieting mind sufficiently to access those deeper levels.

We have been trained from birth to please others. As children we are rewarded for good behavior and punished for its opposite. In school we get good grades when we give the teacher the right answer. As adults we keep our jobs and receive promotions for their definition of right action. We don’t make a move without the consensus of our friends and relatives. We make major life decisions to please our parents and friends, and in so doing, lose our precious connection to what is real within.

The challenge is to let go of our attachment to or identification with the thoughts and opinions of those around us and learn to act from our deepest inner direction, direction that may be contrary to the opinions of those close to us. What other people think of me is none of my business. Dare to BE your authenticity.
